Yokosuka, Naval base city in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Yokosuka sits on the Miura Peninsula between Tokyo Bay and Sagami Bay, a city with long stretches of coastline, harbor facilities and residential neighborhoods. Buildings spread across several hills and valleys, where navy installations alternate with industrial zones and smaller fishing villages.
The naval base emerged after 1860 when Japan opened its first modern shipyard for warships. It later became the main location for the imperial fleet and was taken over by American forces after 1945.
Dobuita Street shows the American military presence today through burger joints next to classic ramen shops. Locals shop where navy souvenirs mix with everyday goods and both cultures exist side by side.
Trains from Yokosuka Station run directly to Tokyo and take roughly an hour for the journey. Many streets follow harbor fences, so only certain sections remain open to the public.
The battleship Mikasa rests permanently anchored in the park and is the only surviving warship from before the era of modern all-big-gun dreadnoughts anywhere in the world. Visitors can walk the deck and explore parts of the interior.
