Enoshima Aquarium, Public aquarium in Fujisawa, Japan
Enoshima Aquarium is a public aquarium in Fujisawa that displays marine species from the Pacific Ocean and Sagami Bay in themed exhibition areas. Several zones feature different habitats and animal groups including jellyfish displays and penguin enclosures.
The aquarium opened in 1952 as a coastal marine center and grew into one of the most visited facilities in the Kantō region. Complete rebuilding in 2004 introduced larger tanks and new educational sections focused on regional marine research.
Exhibits dedicated to Sagami Bay showcase species found in regional waters while staff explain conservation efforts during daily feeding demonstrations. The layout reflects Japanese emphasis on educational displays that connect marine life to local coastal communities.
The facility is a short walk from Katase-Enoshima Station and opens daily from morning until late afternoon. All areas are accessible by elevator or ground-level pathways and signposted routes guide visitors through different thematic sections.
The Shirasu Science section lets visitors follow the complete growth of Japanese anchovies from egg stage to adult fish. Illuminated tubes make the transparent larvae visible while explanatory panels detail each stage of development for these tiny creatures.
