Enoshima Sea Candle, Observation tower and lighthouse in Fujisawa, Japan.
The Enoshima Sea Candle is a 60 meter tall observation structure and working lighthouse situated within Samuel Cocking Garden on Enoshima Island. The viewing platform offers vistas of Mount Fuji and Sagami Bay.
The current structure opened in 2003 and replaced a 1951 lighthouse that was built from leftovers of a parachute tower. Its opening coincided with celebrations related to the local railway company.
The tower sits near Enoshima Shrine, where visitors and locals make offerings to Benzaiten, the goddess linked to music, knowledge, and water. The spiritual character of this location becomes apparent as you walk through the gardens and see the temple structures.
The climb to the viewing room is straightforward and accessible for most visitors, though stairs are involved. Comfortable footwear is recommended, especially if weather is damp or breezy.
The building serves a dual purpose: it is both an active maritime beacon with significant range and a public viewing destination for tourists. This combination is uncommon and makes the site functionally interesting.
