Tsujidō Beach, Pacific beach in Fujisawa, Japan
Tsujidō Beach is a sandy stretch along the Pacific coast in Kanagawa, sitting close to residential neighborhoods in Fujisawa. The shore is divided into sections for swimmers and surfers, with changing rooms, showers, and food stalls set up along the waterfront.
The land behind the beach served as a training ground for the Imperial Japanese Navy and later for US forces after World War II. In 1959 it was returned to civilian use and the area opened as a public shore.
The street leading toward Tsujidō Station is lined with surf shops, showing how deeply surfing is woven into daily life here. Walking through the area, it quickly becomes clear that this sport is more than a pastime for locals.
The beach is easiest to reach on foot from Tsujidō Station, which is connected to the waterfront by a short walking path. Outside the main summer season the shore is much less crowded and easier to enjoy.
Near the shore stands the Shonan Cooking Center, a building that houses thirteen oden restaurants originally moved here from Enoshima island. Oden is a traditional Japanese dish of ingredients simmered in broth, and this spot preserves a style of cooking closely tied to the local coast.
