Kamakura-gū

Kamakura-gū, Shinto shrine in Nikaidō, Kamakura, Japan.

Kamakura-gū is a Shinto shrine in the Nikaidō neighborhood of Kamakura, Japan, where pale wooden structures with pewter-green roofs rest among old trees. The complex includes several buildings such as the main hall, a shrine gate and a small garden with a pond, connected by pathways and low stone lanterns.

Emperor Meiji founded the shrine in 1869 as a memorial to Prince Morinaga, who fought against the rule of the Kamakura samurai. Ashikaga Tadayoshi had the prince executed two years after his victory, linking the site to political conflicts of the 14th century.

The name honors Prince Morinaga, whose memory visitors pay respects to through offerings and quiet moments at the main hall. Local families use the grounds for blessing rituals tied to life events such as birth, marriage or the new year, leaving ema wooden plaques inscribed with personal wishes.

The shrine lies east of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and can be reached after a short walk through wooded grounds. The garden opens for a small fee, and a modest shop offers protective amulets and traditional souvenirs.

A cave on the grounds marks the spot where Prince Morinaga was held captive before his execution. Visitors can see the narrow opening that serves as a reminder of this dark episode in Japanese history.
