Shōchōju-in

Shōchōju-in is a former temple whose ruins appear as stone foundations and fragments of traditional Japanese religious buildings scattered across a forested area in Kamakura District. The remains reveal the basic layout and size of the original religious complex.

The temple was founded in 1185 when Minamoto no Yoritomo, the first shogun, was establishing military rule in eastern Japan. This creation was part of building Kamakura as the new center of government power.

The site reflects how Buddhist beliefs shaped daily life in medieval Kamakura through its architectural choices and layout. It shows the spiritual importance these places held for people in the region at that time.

The site is reachable by local train, with the nearest station within walking distance. Prepare for damp forest ground and uneven terrain, as the ruins lie within a natural woodland setting.
