Keikyu Aburatsubo Marine Park, Public aquarium in Miura, Japan.
Keikyu Aburatsubo Marine Park was an aquarium in Miura, Kanagawa Prefecture, that displayed numerous species of fish and marine creatures in tanks positioned along the Sagami Bay coastline. The facility included several indoor and outdoor areas with thematically arranged aquariums and demonstration spaces where visitors could learn about the regional marine life.
The architecture studio Daiken Sekkei designed the facility, which opened on April 27, 1968, and introduced local aquatic life. The institution remained in operation until September 30, 2021, when it closed its doors after more than five decades.
The park once offered guided tours that helped visitors understand the behavior of sea animals and their habitats in Sagami Bay. Training demonstrations with animals attracted many families who gained direct insight into underwater life.
The former facility was accessible by taking a roughly 15-minute bus ride from Misakiguchi Station on the Keikyu Kurihama Line. The seaside location once provided easy access to the outdoor tank areas and indoor aquarium sections.
The facility sat directly beside the bay water and offered views of open sea surfaces on clear days. Some of the outdoor tanks were arranged so that they received natural sunlight, making the water shimmer differently throughout the day.
