Toyoshima Bridge, Road bridge in Kure, Japan

Toyoshima Bridge is a suspension bridge that connects Kamikamagarijima and Toyoshima islands in Kure. It serves as part of Prefectural Road Route 356 in Hiroshima and forms a key transportation link across the local island network.

The bridge opened in November 2008 and marked a major step forward in regional infrastructure development. Its completion significantly improved transportation connections among the islands in the area.

Locals call it the Abi Bridge, after the loon (abi), the prefecture bird long familiar in these waters. The nickname sits alongside the official name on signage, and the 2008 completion linked the Aki-nada islands by road from Honshu to Okamurajima in Imabari, Ehime.

Toyoshima Bridge is a toll-free general road, open around the clock rather than only in daylight. It carries Prefectural Road Route 356, with a 7.25 m roadway and a 2 m walkway on one side. The Oura Tunnel sits directly at the Kamikamagarijima end, and the 50 m clearance below the deck lets ships pass through the strait.

The bridge received the prestigious Tanaka Prize from the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. This award recognizes its outstanding engineering achievement and the high technical standards applied during construction.
