Shakadō Museum of Jōmon Culture

The Shakadō Museum of Jomon Culture is an archaeological museum in Fuefuki that displays items from excavations near Mount Fuji. The collection includes pottery, stone tools, and clay figurines that provide insights into the life of these early people.

This museum grew from large-scale excavations during highway construction, when many old settlement sites and burial grounds were discovered. The finds date from the Jomon period, one of Japan's oldest cultures.

The displayed objects show how Jomon people made their pottery and what rituals they practiced during burials. These insights reveal much about their daily habits and social structures.

The museum is located in a parking area along a highway and is easy to access. Visitors should set aside enough time to view the many displayed items and reconstructions thoroughly.

The collection stands out for an exceptionally large number of dogu figurines, tiny clay figures with enigmatic features. These pieces still raise questions about their purpose in Jomon society.
