顔振峠, Mountain pass in Saitama, Japan
Kaaburi Pass, also written as 顔振峠, is a mountain pass in the eastern Chichibu Mountains, sitting on the border between Hanno City and Ogose Town in Saitama Prefecture. A short walk from the main path leads to an observation deck with views over the surrounding mountain terrain and, on clear days, distant city buildings.
According to local legend, a notable military leader from the Heian period stopped at this location several times while crossing through these mountains. This association gave the site a lasting place in the memory of the surrounding region.
The old teahouse along the pass is still open today and welcomes hikers who stop to rest and chat. Visitors who pause there often find themselves in conversation with locals who walk this route regularly.
The path to the pass suits regular walkers and does not require any special equipment, though sturdy footwear is a good idea, particularly after rain. The observation deck is easy to find and does not take long to reach from the main trail.
The current name of the pass is thought to derive from a word describing a crown-shaped peak nearby, with the pronunciation gradually shifting over generations. This kind of sound change is not unusual in Japanese mountain regions, but it makes the name a small record of how spoken language drifts over time.
