Ganjoji, Buddhist temple in Otokiri district, Gifu, Japan
Ganjoji is a Buddhist temple in Otokiri district known for its monumental central Buddha image. The statue rises about 13.7 meters tall, built from a ginkgo wood base and wooden framework that supports its weight.
The temple originated roughly 1300 years ago when a Mino clan leader named Murakuni Oyori built a shrine at the site. A Buddhist monk named Taicho later relocated and transformed it into the temple that stands today.
The temple grounds feature a 1250-year-old cherry tree, designated as a national natural monument and connected to Princess Chujo's healing journey.
The temple is accessible by public transportation from the central station area without requiring a long journey. Check ahead for current visiting conditions and any temporary closures before planning your trip.
The central Buddha image is the largest lacquered wooden statue in Japan, a rare craft achievement. Its surface was meticulously covered with Buddhist texts and gold leaf layer by layer, making it a masterwork of traditional techniques.
