Gansenji

Gansenji is a Buddhist temple in Naniwa-ku, located approximately 200 meters west of Daikokucho Station. The grounds combine traditional Japanese architecture with landscaped gardens within the urban setting of Osaka.

The temple was founded by Hossyo, the eighth son of Onono Imoko, during the same period when Shitennoji temple was constructed. This shared timeframe reflects the area's importance in early Buddhist development.

The Garyoken organization within the temple maintains gagaku, the ancient musical form from the Japanese imperial court. Visitors can experience these traditional performances that have been practiced at this location for centuries.

The temple grounds feature spaces for religious ceremonies, cultural events, and traditional music performances throughout the year. Plan time to explore the gardens, especially if you want to attend a performance.

The temple garden was designed by landscape artist Soami and carefully restored after wartime damage. The restoration followed the original plans, showcasing the site's historical garden design.
