Mount Rai, Mountain summit in Itoshima and Saga, Japan
Mount Rai is a summit in the Sefuri Mountain range that marks the natural boundary between Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures. The mountain sits within the Itoshima and Saga area and is accessed by marked hiking trails leading to a viewpoint at the top.
During the Meiji Restoration in the 19th century, Buddhist temples on the mountain were torn down as Japan adopted a state Shinto policy. This shift permanently changed the religious character of the site and left traces that are still visible today.
The summit holds a small Shinto shrine dedicated to Raijin, the Japanese god of thunder, from whom the mountain takes its name. Reaching the top, visitors find a quiet spot that still carries religious meaning for people in the surrounding region.
The trail to the top starts at Raizan Kannon-mae Bus Stop and follows a marked path up the mountain. Sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing are recommended, as conditions can change quickly at this elevation.
At the base of the mountain stands the Raizan Sennyoji Daihioin Temple, home to 500 stone Buddha figures and a wooden Avalokitesvara statue that survived the 19th century policy of dismantling Buddhist sites. This collection gives a concrete sense of the religious life that existed here before those changes.
