Ikisan Choshizuka Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan
Ikisan Choshizuka Kofun is a keyhole-shaped burial mound featuring a rounded front section and a rectangular rear section. When viewed from above, this ancient structure displays the classic design typical of major grave sites from early Japan.
This burial mound was built in the second half of the 5th century during Japan's Kofun period. The construction reflects how communities of that time honored their dead and expressed social status through monumental grave structures.
Inside the burial chamber, archaeologists discovered bronze mirrors, iron weapons, and decorative items that indicate the social status of the interred individual.
The site features informational signs and parking areas for visitors interested in exploring this ancient burial ground. Comfortable shoes are recommended since the mound covers a substantial area and walking around the entire structure requires some time.
The structure measures 169 meters in length, making it one of the largest keyhole-shaped burial mounds found in eastern Japan.
