Aobanomori Park, Urban park in Aoba-chō, Japan
Aobanomori Park is an urban park in the Aoba-cho district of Chiba, Japan, with walking paths, ponds, playgrounds, and open green areas. It also contains a Natural History Museum and an ancient burial mound known as Araku Kofun.
The park opened in 1987 to give Chiba's growing population more green space within the city. It was created during a period of rapid urban development that made public parks a priority for local authorities.
The Natural History Museum inside the park runs year-round exhibitions on local plants and animals from the Chiba region. The museum connects everyday visitors with the natural world around them in a hands-on way.
The park has restrooms, benches, picnic areas, and grilling spots near the main entrance, so it is good to arrive with what you need for the day. Comfortable shoes are useful as the grounds are spread across a large area with varied terrain.
The Araku Kofun burial mound, dating from the Kofun period between the 3rd and 7th centuries, sits in the middle of the park and can be seen during a regular walk. It is rare to find remains from that era placed so openly inside a modern city park.
