Inohana Castle, Mountain castle in Chuo Ward, Chiba, Japan
Inohana Castle rises on a hill with steep cliffs to the west and the Miyako River to the north forming natural barriers. The position once gave military advantages through the hard-to-climb slopes.
Taira Tsuneshige founded the fortress in 1126 as the power center of the Chiba clan. The compound remained in operation for over three centuries until 1455.
The folk museum on the grounds displays objects and documents from the era of the Chiba clan. Visitors can see through the exhibits how the family and the region lived in earlier centuries.
The site lies five minutes from Kenchomae Monorail Station and offers 25 free parking spaces. The grounds are easy to explore on foot.
The name Inohana means boar nose and arose from the shape of the promontory. From certain viewpoints the outline of the castle hill resembles the profile of a wild boar.
