Chiba Prefectural Central Library, Prefectural library in Inohana Park, Japan.
Chiba Prefectural Central Library is the main public library of Chiba Prefecture, set inside Inohana Park near the city center. The multi-story building, designed by architect Masato Otaka, holds books, digital resources, and research materials across several reading rooms and specialized sections.
The library opened in 1892, making it one of the oldest public library institutions in the region. Over the following decades, the building went through a major redesign to meet growing demand for collections and services.
The library holds a large collection focused on Chiba Prefecture's local history, and residents come here to trace regional roots and past developments. Inside the reading rooms, students, older visitors, and researchers sit side by side at the same tables.
The library is inside Inohana Park and can be reached on foot from both Honchiba Station and Keisei Chiba-Chuo Station. Going in the morning gives you time to walk through the park before settling in, as the grounds around the building are pleasant to explore.
Masato Otaka, the architect behind the building, was a co-founder of the Japanese Metabolism movement, which proposed radical ideas about cities and architecture in the 1960s. The library was designed outside that period, so the building shows a different, quieter side of his work.
