Saginuma Kofun Cluster

Saginuma Kofun Cluster is a group of ancient burial mounds with round and keyhole-shaped forms scattered across the landscape. These different shapes and varying sizes show differences in how burials were made in that period.

These mounds were built between 300 and 600 AD for important people in society. The period shows development in how burial practices changed over time.

The burial mounds show how ancient people honored their leaders and which social groups held influence. You can see from the different mound shapes that different ranks of people received different types of graves.

The site is best experienced with guided tours that explain the structure and discoveries in detail. Wear comfortable shoes and expect uneven terrain as you walk around.

The pottery and tools found here look different from those at other similar burial sites. These distinctive styles give clues about regional differences in ancient customs.
