AEON Tower, Skyscraper in Makuhari New City, Japan
AEON Tower is a 26-storey, 112.55-metre office skyscraper in Makuhari New City, Chiba. Its light grey facade has a wide central band of dark glass windows between pale mullions, flanked by narrow columns of small square windows; red capital letters reading "AEON" sit in the upper left corner, and a recessed upper tier with dark rectangular openings tops the flat roof.
The building was completed in 1994 through collaboration between Tohata Architects & Engineers and Kajima Corporation. It emerged during the economic expansion period when the Makuhari area was being developed as a modern business district.
The tower's facade borrows the colonnade motif of ancient Greek architecture, visible as vertical bands of pale mullions between dark glass. Inside, the Aeon Historical Museum opened on 22 March 2013. The building also houses the headquarters of Aeon group companies and their labour union.
AEON Tower stands in Nakase, Mihama Ward, Makuhari New City. The nearest station is Kaihin-Makuhari on the JR East Keiyo Line, about a six-minute walk away. By car, the closest interchanges are Wangan-Chiba and Wangan-Narashino on the Higashi-Kanto Expressway and Makuhari on the Keiyo Road.
The facade's vertical bands of dark glass and small square windows echo the colonnades of ancient Greek architecture, a detail the designers worked into the tower. The adjacent low-rise annex, formerly the Makuhari Tokyo Marine Building, was bought in 2011 and now houses the headquarters of Aeon Topvalu and a Ministop store.
