Makuhari Messe, Convention center in Makuhari New City, Japan
Makuhari Messe is a sprawling convention center in the Nakase neighborhood with exhibition halls, conference rooms and an event hall spread across multiple floors. The complex features spaces of different sizes suited for trade shows, concerts and professional conferences.
Architect Fumihiko Maki designed the center, which opened in October 1989. The facility later received the BCS Prize and the Public Buildings Award in recognition of its architectural design.
The name combines Makuhari, derived from the historic villages of Maku and Hari, with the French word messe meaning exhibition. The building serves as a meeting point for professionals from technology, entertainment and industry who gather here for international trade shows.
Access is through Kaihinmakuhari station on the Keiyō Line, within walking distance of the center. Express bus lines connect the venue to several regional hubs, making arrival from different directions straightforward.
Rock band Glay set a Guinness World Record here in July 1999 by performing the largest ticketed concert in history before 200,000 attendees. This record demonstrates the exceptional capacity of the facility for large-scale events with massive audiences.
