Ikuno Mine, Silver mine and mining museum in Asago, Japan
The Ikuno Mine features a network of underground tunnels stretching one kilometer through the mountain, displaying various mining methods from different periods.
The mine operated from 807 until 1972, producing up to 560 kilograms of silver monthly during its peak in 1620 under different ruling clans.
The mine complex includes a cave shrine dedicated to Kanayamahime no Mikoto, the mining deity, with chalcopyrites presented as offerings.
The mine maintains a constant temperature of 13 degrees Celsius throughout the year and offers guided tours with English explanations for international visitors.
Two original gateposts at the entrance display the imperial chrysanthemum crest, marking the mine's former ownership by the Japanese imperial family.
