Hanawa Castle

Hanawa Castle is a mountaintop fortress in Kazuno featuring defensive walls built from wood and stone positioned at a strategic elevation. The structure commands views over surrounding valleys and was designed to control access routes through the region.

The fortress arose as a military outpost during the Sengoku period to monitor trade routes and mountain passes. Its hilltop location gave defenders a crucial advantage when resisting attacks from rival clans.

The fortress displays traditional Japanese military design with defensive rings that adapt to the mountain slope, using natural features to create protection. Walking through the site, you can see how the layout follows the terrain rather than fighting against it.

The site is accessible via a mountain path that leads to the remaining stone foundations and defensive structures. Sturdy footwear is advisable as the trail is steep and the ground uneven throughout.

The site contains original foundation stones showing early Japanese construction methods from the warring states era. These well-preserved stones reveal the craftsmanship that was later refined for larger castle complexes.
