Leuchtfeuer Tokio, Maritime lighthouse in Tokyo Bay, Japan
The Tokio Lighthouse is a navigational light structure in Tokyo Bay standing 32 meters tall with distinctive architectural features. The tower combines with a bowl-shaped base at the bay entrance, creating an unusual form for a maritime beacon.
The lighthouse began operation in 1969, replacing a lightship that had guided vessels from the Izu Islands through the bay since 1947. It served maritime navigation until 2010, when newer systems took over its guiding role.
The structure carries the name Danjo no shimboru because its design represents a combination of male and female forms. Visitors can see this symbolic meaning reflected in how the tower and bowl-shaped base come together.
The lighthouse is located at the entrance of Tokyo Bay at coordinates 35°34'0"N and 139°49'42"E. It sits in open water and is best viewed from a boat or from the shoreline at a distance.
The original light equipment from this lighthouse is now displayed in the Museum of Maritime Science. Visitors interested in the technology can see this historical apparatus preserved in the museum's collection.
