Sunabara Site, Archaeological excavation site in Matsumoto, Japan
Sunabara Site is an archaeological location in Matsumoto with remains from multiple periods of settlement. The site includes dwelling pits, storage holes, an earth mound, and various objects made from stone, clay, metal, and other materials.
Excavations in 1998 uncovered settlements from the Jomon period dating back approximately 11,500 years. Medieval structures were later built on the site, showing continuous habitation spanning thousands of years.
The artifacts discovered here reflect how people organized their lives and communities across different eras. Tools and pottery suggest that the site served multiple purposes for its inhabitants.
When visiting, keep in mind that this is an active or preserved excavation site where remains may be partially exposed or protected. The Matsumoto City government provides information about access and viewing conditions.
This location demonstrates an unusually long history of human habitation in a single place. The layers of settlement reveal that people repeatedly chose to occupy this area across different historical periods rather than abandoning it.
