Namba Station, Metro station in central Osaka, Japan
Namba Station is a major transportation hub in central Osaka that connects six different railway lines in a single complex. The facility spans multiple levels with nine platforms serving different operators including private railways and public metro lines.
The Nankai Electric Railway section opened in December 1885, making it one of the earliest rail connections in the area. The Osaka Metro Midosuji Line was added decades later in October 1935, transforming the location into a major transportation interchange.
The station name appears in hiragana and kanji characters on signage, as the kanji for Namba can also be read as Naniwa, reflecting the place's dual linguistic identity. This naming tradition connects the modern transportation hub to older place names from the region.
The complex has multiple ticket gates, elevators, escalators, restrooms, and coin lockers spread across different levels. Give yourself time to navigate the facility since different train lines are located on separate floors and operated by different companies.
A future expansion project will add the new Naniwasuji Line by 2031, featuring underground platforms branching from the Nankai Main Line. This growth will further strengthen the interchange and create additional connections across the city.
