Château de Ryogaya

Ryogaya Castle is a medieval fortress built on a strategic hilltop in Saitama Prefecture. The site displays preserved stone walls, a dry moat, and multiple defensive levels that create distinct sections across the terrain.

The fortress was built in the 15th century during the Sengoku period to control key routes between the Kanto Plain and Hachioji. Its construction reflects the military strategies of an era when various regional powers competed for territorial control.

The shrine at the summit reflects how the site blended military function with spiritual significance in medieval times. Visitors can observe how this location served both as a defensive stronghold and a sacred space for the local community.

The grounds feature walking paths and informational panels that guide visitors through the different fortification sections. Be prepared for uneven terrain and steep pathways, especially as you move toward the upper levels of the site.

The eastern section of the site incorporates a natural stream as an integral part of its defensive walls. This design shows how castle builders used the landscape itself as a protective measure.
