Niiyama Jinja, Shinto shrine in Japan
Niiyama Jinja is a Shinto shrine located in Kanzaki in Saga Prefecture, near the Sefuri Mountains. The buildings stand among trees and natural surroundings, featuring simple wooden architecture with dark tile roofs typical of the region.
The shrine has a long history serving the local community as a place for festivals and important life events. It once held the status of Ken-sha, a shrine of regional importance, but lost this designation in 1946 due to national reforms.
The shrine is dedicated to the deity Ōyamakui, worshipped for protection and good health. Visitors come to pay respects and seek blessings for their families and communities.
The shrine is accessible via stone paths leading through a garden-like area to the main hall. Visitors should know that signage in other languages is limited, so it helps to research the location beforehand.
The shrine celebrates a major festival every twelve years honoring the monkey, seen as the messenger of the gods, with the next celebration occurring in 2028. Many monkey statues and images of the god Sanno Okami are found throughout the shrine.
