Obukumayama Kōgoishi

Obukumayama Kōgoishi is an ancient stone fortification spanning mountain ridges in Saga with defensive walls and gate structures. The site follows the natural terrain, with carefully stacked stones running across steep hillsides and connecting different elevations.

The fortification was built during early Japanese times to defend mountain territories and trade routes. Archaeologists uncovered it in 1941, and the government designated it a national Historic Site in 1951.

The stone walls show how ancient people lived on and defended these mountain ridges. The way the stones fit together reflects the practical knowledge and resourcefulness of the builders who created it.

The best way to explore the site is on foot using the established hiking trails that connect different sections. The terrain is hilly with some steep areas, so sturdy footwear and a reasonable level of fitness help you move around comfortably.

The stones are stacked dry without mortar, which allowed the walls to shift slightly during earthquakes without collapsing. This flexible building method was especially practical for a region prone to seismic activity.
