Shichiku Garden, Organic flower garden in Obihiro, Japan
Shichiku Garden is a large flower garden in Obihiro covering around 5 hectares, with more than 2,500 flower varieties planted across twelve different sections. These sections showcase various plant types including water lilies and clematis.
The garden was founded in 1989 when Shichiku Akiyo, at age 63, began cultivating flowers after her husband's death. Its creation came from a personal process of grief and healing.
The garden demonstrates Japanese growing methods through natural cultivation, where plants thrive without pesticides or artificial irrigation systems. Visitors can observe this approach to nature as they walk through the different sections.
The garden is open to visitors from late April through November and requires advance ticket purchase through an online booking system. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended since the grounds invite exploration across considerable distances.
A striking feature is a formal flower bed composed entirely of annual plants set against the backdrop of the Tokachi Plain and Hidaka Mountains. This carefully designed arrangement provides visual contrast to the rest of the garden's natural approach.
