Mount Mokoto

Mount Mokoto is a dormant volcano in Akan Mashu National Park, rising about 1,000 meters above sea level across eastern Hokkaido. The mountain features marked hiking routes that pass through forested sections and alpine zones on their way toward the summit.

The mountain was formed through volcanic activity in a region where multiple tectonic plates converge, shaping Hokkaido's landscape. These geological processes created the terrain that exists today and made the area central to the region's natural character.

The mountain carries ties to the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido, with its name possibly derived from their language. Visitors can sense this cultural presence while moving through the landscape that has long held meaning for local communities.

Hiking typically starts from a rest house and takes roughly two hours to reach the summit on marked trails. Mountain weather can change quickly, so proper gear and careful planning are important when visiting.

The trail features white birch trees called dakekanba that stand out especially in cooler seasons, and a guardian statue positioned at a rocky clearing. These elements add an unexpected human and natural dimension that goes beyond simple hiking.
