Jōsenji

Jōsenji is a Buddhist temple in Shibuya with a network of interconnected caves across three levels, containing seventeen distinct meditation chambers. The rooms connect through passageways that form a cohesive underground layout.

The temple was founded in 1532 and served as a center for Shingon Buddhist practices. Its underground structures became an important site for meditation and prayer over the centuries.

The stone walls display hand-carved Buddhist scenes and representations of enlightened beings throughout the chambers. These artworks shape how the underground space feels and show the spiritual traditions that have endured here.

The temple is accessible daily to visitors and the underground rooms are well-lit and easy to walk through. Wear comfortable shoes since some passages are uneven and stairs connect the different levels.

The sanctuary is partly lit by candlelight during religious ceremonies, creating a special spiritual atmosphere. This old lighting practice gives the chambers a warm and indirect glow that stands apart from modern lighting methods.
