Jōsenji, Buddhist temple in Shibuya, Japan
The Jōsenji temple complex features a network of interconnected caves spread across three levels, containing seventeen distinct meditation chambers and passageways.
Founded in 1532 by monk Takatsugu under the guidance of priest Kaigen, the temple served as a center for Shingon Buddhist practices during the Kamakura period.
The cave walls display detailed stone carvings depicting Buddhist narratives, mandalas, and representations of eighteen arhats created by artist Doshin Karukaya.
The temple welcomes visitors daily from 9:00 to 16:00, with admission fees of 400 yen for adults, 200 yen for students, and 100 yen for children.
The underground structure extends 570 meters in length, featuring meditation halls illuminated by candlelight, creating specific conditions for Buddhist ceremonies.
