Sanada-reisha

Sanada-reisha, Shinto shrine in Japan

Sanada-reisha is a small shrine built on a hilltop in Odawara, surrounded by quiet nature and trees. The buildings follow traditional design with wooden structures and are jointly managed with a nearby Buddhist temple, giving the site a blend of Shinto and Buddhist elements.

The shrine was founded by Minamoto no Yoritomo, a famous military leader, on the site of the historic Battle of Ishibashiyama. It stands on ground known for its connection to important military events and preserves the memory of these conflicts.

The shrine honors Sanada Yoichi Yoshitada, a warrior from a historic battle in the area. Visitors come to pray for health and protection, especially for throat and breathing problems.

The shrine is easily reached via a small steep road climbing from the coast, with unpaved parking available directly in front. A guardian statue holding a puppy stands at the site and is a notable feature that catches visitors' attention.

A local legend speaks of a twisted field nearby where plants grow in strange shapes, supposedly connected to where the warrior defeated his enemy. The shrine celebrates monthly on the 23rd anniversary of Sanada Yoichi's death with a festival that draws local visitors and those interested in history.
