那須雪崩事故, Avalanche accident site at Nasu Family Ski Resort, Japan

The site is located on a steep slope of Mount Chausudake where a high school mountaineering club was conducting winter training. The area now serves as a reminder of the hazards present in alpine terrain during severe weather.

An avalanche occurred here in March 2017 during a high school mountaineering club training session, killing seven students and one teacher. The tragedy led to a thorough review of school policies protecting students during outdoor activities.

The incident prompted major changes in how Japanese schools approach mountain training and winter safety for student groups.

The area is steep and subject to harsh winter conditions, so visitors should be prepared for extreme weather and slippery terrain. Professional mountain guides now accompany school groups during winter months to ensure all safety measures are followed.

Parents of the victims created a 3D computer simulation called Nasu3D to demonstrate the exact conditions during the avalanche. This tool now helps schools and trainers better understand the risks involved in alpine training.
