The Gion-yama Kofun is an ancient burial mound situated on a hillside of Mount Kora, overlooking the Chikugo Plain. Multiple stone burial chambers and grave features are arranged around the main structure, creating a complex funerary complex.
The burial mound was built in the 3rd century and belongs to the nationally designated Shinden-hara Kofun group. This period saw powerful clan leaders construct elaborate burial complexes to display their status and influence.
The red-painted stone chamber at the summit shows how people of that era honored their dead. Such details reveal much about the craftsmanship and burial beliefs of the ancient society.
The site is located near Kurume Interchange on the Kyushu Expressway and is accessible by a short walk. From the Nishitetsu Bus stop at Mii-machi, the burial mound can be reached within a few minutes on foot.
The site contains more than 60 burial facilities of different types, showing how entire communities were laid to rest together. This diversity of grave structures reveals the social complexity of the people who built this burial ground.
