Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka, Art museum in Kita-ku district, Osaka, Japan
The Nakanoshima Museum of Art presents more than 6,000 modern and contemporary works from Japan and other countries, including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and design pieces. The building itself combines transparent glass surfaces and open passages that connect the interior with the surrounding river landscape.
Planning for the museum began in 1990 and continued for three decades before it opened in February 2022. Architect Katsuhiko Endo designed the building as part of a cultural project in the Nakanoshima area.
The collection spans multiple periods of modern art, including European masters like Modigliani and Japanese avant-garde artists from the postwar era. Visitors discover a selection of paintings, photography, and design objects that show the dialogue between Western and Japanese modernism.
The museum sits at 4-3-1 Nakanoshima and can be reached from several train stations, including Watanabebashi, Higobashi, Fukushima, and Shin-Fukushima. Opening hours run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the exhibition rooms spread across multiple floors.
A public passage inside the building allows passersby to access art installations without entering the main exhibition rooms. This area connects the street and the riverbank, making parts of the collection freely available to everyone.
