Nakanoshima Mitsui Building, High-rise office building in Kita-ku, Japan

The Nakanoshima Mitsui Building is a 140-metre office tower on Nakanoshima island in Kita-ku, Osaka, completed in 2002 to a design by Cesar Pelli's agency. Its exterior of stainless steel, stone and glass carries over the vertical-line facade of the former Nakanoshima Mitsui Building, designed by Tadao Takahashi and finished in 1933. Toray's Osaka headquarters occupies the upper floors, marked by a 'TORAY' logo high on the east wall.

The current tower was built from 2000 to 2002 on the site of the former Nakanoshima Mitsui Building, a 1933 structure designed by Tadao Takahashi. Its design by Cesar Pelli's firm carries over the old building's vertical-line facade, now clad in stainless steel, stone and glass. It won the Osaka Machinami Award (encouragement prize) and the Good Design Award in 2003.

The east facade carries a 'TORAY' logo near the top, marking the Osaka headquarters of the textile and chemicals firm Toray on the upper floors. From 2002 to 2013 the building was part of the OSAKA Hikari Renaissance winter illumination: blinds on the glass of floors 15 to 30 were opened and closed to draw Christmas trees, reindeer and Santa figures, ending with the 12th edition in 2013.

The building stands on Nakanoshima, the island between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers. The nearest stations are Watanabebashi on the Keihan Nakanoshima Line and Higobashi on the Osaka Metro Yotsubashi Line. The Toray logo is on the upper east wall, while the west facade facing the neighbouring Nakanoshima Daibiru is plain.

From 2002 to 2013 the east glass facade between the 15th and 30th floors served as a canvas for the OSAKA Light Renaissance: blinds were opened and closed to draw Christmas trees, reindeer and Santa figures, each year with a new title such as "Tama-chan Santa" in 2003 or "THANK YOU" in 2013, the twelfth and final edition.
