Tokachi Millennium Forest, Natural garden in Shimizu, Japan
Tokachi Millennium Forest is a nature-based garden that spreads across a plateau and wooded foothills of the Hidaka mountain range in Shimizu. The site features multiple garden areas, walking trails, and educational facilities for visitors.
The project was founded in 2004 by entrepreneur Mitsushige Hayashi to offset his carbon footprint. The initiative was a response to the environmental impact of his newspaper business.
The place uses native plant species and natural cultivation methods that reflect local environmental practices. These approaches let visitors see how sustainable gardening works in the region.
Visitors can come during spring and fall seasons and explore much of the grounds on foot. The paths are well-developed for visitors and several activities like guided tours are available to suit different interests.
The grounds feature wave-like structures spread across the valley created through collaboration between local and international landscape architects. This design creates a visually striking layout not commonly seen in other gardens.
