退休寺, 愛知県春日井市にある浄土宗の寺院
Tsuiten-ji is a traditional Buddhist temple in Kasugai with simple wooden buildings that show careful maintenance and a quiet atmosphere. The grounds contain a main hall with a statue of Amida Nyorai, stone statues of Buddhist figures, an historic well, and gardens with plants and trees that shift with the seasons.
The temple was built in 1644 by Onozawa Goro-bei, a samurai retainer of Lord Tokugawa Yoshinao, as a place for prayer and reflection for the community. It survived fires in the 1770s that required rebuilding, and the most recent main hall was constructed in 2017.
The temple belongs to the Jodo sect of Buddhism and honors Amida Nyorai, a figure worshippers come to for protection and guidance. Wooden statues of Kanon Bosatsu and Jizo Bosatsu are protected as important cultural assets, showing the skill of local artisans and reflecting centuries of community faith.
The temple is about 14 minutes on foot from the nearest train station, with bus stops also nearby for access. The grounds are easy to walk around, with open spaces and clear paths that allow visitors to move quietly and take in the peaceful surroundings at their own pace.
A striking feature is the historic well called the 'Help Well', dug by Goro-bei to solve water shortages for villagers and now recognized as an important cultural artifact. This well tells the story of community care and shows how a simple structure gained deep meaning through its connection to local lives.
