大谷古墳

The Otani Kofun is an ancient burial mound in Kyotango with a distinctive two-part shape that reflects Japanese tomb architecture from centuries ago. The structure shows clear construction techniques with a rounded rear section and a rectangular front, both well-defined and visible today.

The mound was built during the late 5th to early 6th century when elite members of society received elaborate burial rites. A stone sarcophagus placed inside the rounded rear section served as the burial chamber during this period.

Archaeological excavations revealed numerous artifacts including bronze mirrors, weapons, farming tools, and horse equipment, reflecting burial practices of ancient Japan.

The site is set up as a park that welcomes visitors who can walk around and view the structure from different angles. Plan to spend time exploring the grounds to fully appreciate the scale and shape of the mound.

Researchers found clay cylinders arranged at the base of the mound that reveal secrets about how ancient builders constructed these tombs. Such discoveries provide rare insights into the actual construction methods used centuries ago.
