智賀都神社

智賀都神社, Shinto shrine in Japan

Chiga-tsu Shrine is a Shinto sanctuary in Utsunomiya with two large Zelkova trees over 700 years old, protected as natural monuments. The original temple was established in 778 to honor the deities of Nikko Shrine at this location.

The shrine was established in 778, taking its name from the forest where it was built after deities from Nikko Shrine were enshrined there. During the Edo period, it received special support from the Tokugawa clan.

The shrine is dedicated to Ōnamuji, whom visitors approach for family safety and good harvests. Local residents visit regularly for personal prayers, making it an integral part of their spiritual lives.

The shrine is accessible by public transport, with no parking available, so visiting by bus from the nearest station is recommended. Access is free with no fees required, and visitors can pray at any time without appointments.

The shrine is known for its spectacular festival every 3 years in August, where elaborately decorated floats from multiple neighborhoods converge and a taiko drumming competition called Bukke takes place. This event draws many visitors eager to experience the traditions and energy of the community.
