Meifuku-ji

Meifuku-ji, Buddhist temple in Nakagyō Ward, Kyoto, Japan.

Meifuku-ji stands as a traditional Japanese Buddhist temple featuring classic wooden architecture with a tiled roof, stone gardens, and a main hall that houses sacred Buddhist statues within its peaceful grounds.

Founded in 1480 during the Muromachi period, this Jodo Shinshu temple was originally established in Ohmi Province before being relocated to its current location in Kyoto in 1599 by founder Aoji Yoriken.

The temple serves as an active community center hosting seasonal Buddhist ceremonies, traditional music performances, and cultural festivals that bring together local residents and visitors for religious and social gatherings.

Located just a 3-minute walk from Karasuma-Oike Station, the temple welcomes visitors daily from early morning until late afternoon with free admission, though donations for maintenance are appreciated.

The temple houses an original Amida Nyorai statue believed to date back to the early establishment period, making it one of the few temples in central Kyoto with such historical Buddhist artifacts.
