Hasaike Kofun

Hasaike Kofun is a large burial mound located on a hill in Matsuyama, covering thousands of square meters with commanding views of the surrounding area. The site sits at an elevation that allows visitors to see across the landscape while exploring the ancient structure.

This burial mound dates to the Kofun period and was systematically studied through archaeological excavations between 1992 and 2008. The investigations revealed multiple chambers with distinct characteristics and contents that provided insights into burial practices of that era.

The burial chambers contained numerous Sue pottery pieces, iron implements, and horse harnesses, indicating specific funeral practices of the Kofun period society.

The site is accessible by foot and located near a railway station with train connections to the city center. Walking to the area helps visitors understand how the mound fits into the broader landscape of modern Matsuyama.

One of the internal chambers shows traces of deliberately broken objects, suggesting the mound was reopened multiple times for ritual activities. This discovery indicates the site functioned as an active place of importance over time rather than a one-time burial location.
