Hongyureung

Hongyureung is a royal burial complex in Namyangju featuring stone structures, memorial buildings, and ceremonial grounds laid out following traditional Korean architectural methods. The site contains multiple tomb areas and demonstrates careful planning typical of royal burial grounds.

The site was established during a period of major change in Korea in the late 19th century, when the country faced modern influences and political upheaval. It holds the tombs of emperors and empresses from this crucial moment in Korean history.

The site follows traditional Korean principles for arranging sacred spaces, with separate areas designed for ceremonies and remembering those who passed away. This layout reflects how the royal family expressed their connection to ancestors and spiritual life.

The grounds are easily accessible by public transportation from Seoul, allowing visitors to move freely around the site and explore its different areas. It is respectful to dress appropriately, as this is a place of remembrance.

The complex holds the tombs of Emperor Gojong, Empress Myeongseong, Emperor Sunjong and two of his wives, making it significant for multiple generations of the royal family.
