Gangdong Bridge, Road bridge in Gangdong District, South Korea
Gangdong Bridge is a road bridge that spans the Han River, linking Gangdong District in Seoul with the city of Guri in Gyeonggi Province. It functions as a major section of the Capital Region First Ring Expressway, carrying heavy daily traffic connecting the city and its eastern suburbs.
The bridge opened in December 1991 as part of South Korea's major infrastructure development to enhance transportation networks in eastern Seoul. It was constructed during a period of rapid expansion of the Seoul metropolitan area.
The bridge functions as a gathering point along the riverside where locals and visitors can experience the Han River landscape. It shapes how people move through this part of Seoul and connects communities on either side.
The bridge is best accessed via the expressway, but nearby parks and riverside paths offer easier pedestrian exploration of the area. Visitors can enjoy the best views of the Han River from the parks and paths on either side rather than attempting to cross the bridge itself.
The bridge has an interesting technical history: in 2008, South Korean Army divers conducted specialized underwater inspections to check the structural integrity and ensure safe water passage. These maintenance operations demonstrate the engineering care required to maintain major infrastructure in the region.
