Olympic Bridge, Road bridge across Han River in Seoul, South Korea.
The Olympic Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the Han River and connects the districts of Gwangjin and Songpa with a steel and concrete structure. It has multiple lanes for traffic and is traveled daily by thousands of vehicles moving between eastern parts of the city.
Construction began in 1985 and was delayed by an accident during building before completion in 1990 after the Olympic Games. The project was part of South Korea's rapid modernization in the 1980s and helped connect the city's expanding districts.
The bridge takes its name from the 1988 Seoul Olympics and symbolizes the ambitious infrastructure projects of that era. It shapes the city skyline and is a daily sight for commuters and visitors crossing between eastern districts.
The bridge is not accessible to pedestrians and serves only motor vehicle traffic between eastern districts. The best viewing points are along the riverside promenades on both sides of the Han River where you can see the structure from outside.
A military helicopter attempted in 2001 to position a sculpture on the bridge structure but was involved in an accident. The incident is known in local history and reminds us of the risks involved in ambitious projects like this.
