Bongeunsa

Located across from COEX Mall on Sudo Mountain slope, Bongeunsa features multiple buildings including Jinyeomun Gate, Beopwangru, and a 23-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha statue.

Founded in 794 during King Wonseong's reign by State Preceptor Yeonhoe, Bongeunsa received its current name in 1498 during reconstruction under Queen Jeonghyeon's patronage.

The temple provides traditional Buddhist experiences through various programs, including tea ceremonies, sutra copying, lotus lantern making, and meditation sessions.

Visitors can reach the temple via Bongeunsa Station on Line 9, Exit 1, with a three-minute walk, and entrance to the temple grounds remains free throughout the year.

During a flood in 1925, Head Monk Cheongho transformed the temple into a refuge, saving 708 people from the rising waters of the Han River.
