Bongeunsa

Bongeunsa is a Buddhist temple situated on Sudo Mountain slope across from COEX Mall in Gangnam. The grounds include multiple structures such as Jinyeomun Gate, the Beopwangru pavilion, and a 23-meter-tall Maitreya Buddha statue.

The temple was founded in 794 and received its current name in 1498 during a major reconstruction period. This long continuity shows how the site has remained significant through many changes in the region.

The temple offers tea ceremonies, meditation sessions, and sutra copying workshops that visitors can participate in to experience Buddhist practice firsthand. These activities give people a chance to slow down and connect with the spiritual traditions that shape life here.

During a major flood in 1925, the head monk opened the temple as a refuge and saved hundreds of people from the rising waters of the Han River. This act shows how the temple served the community in times of crisis far beyond its religious role.
