Am Tunnel, Contemporary art gallery in Luxembourg City, Luxembourg
Am Tunnel is a contemporary art gallery housed within an underground passage that runs beneath the Bourbon plateau, sitting roughly 50 feet (15 meters) below street level in Luxembourg City. The space was carved from former military fortifications and now serves as a venue for rotating exhibitions and permanent collections.
The space originated in 1987 from a banking initiative to connect four nearby buildings using the existing underground tunnels. It opened to the public in 1993 and has since remained a cultural venue within these repurposed military passages.
The gallery displays works by Edward Steichen and hosts rotating exhibitions of pieces created by artists from Luxembourg. The underground setting gives these artworks a distinctive presence that surface galleries cannot replicate.
Entry is free and the space is open on weekdays from 9am to 5:30pm, with reduced hours on Sundays from 2pm to 6pm. Wear comfortable shoes since you will be walking through multiple levels of underground passages and rooms.
The tunnel system connects four separate buildings beneath ground level, creating an unexpected pathway through multiple properties. This subterranean link was originally carved as a military fortification within natural rock, making it one of the few art galleries accessed through what was once a defensive structure.
