MKO Abiola Stadium, Football stadium in Abeokuta, Nigeria
MKO Abiola Stadium is a football stadium in Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State in southwestern Nigeria, with concrete stands arranged around a grass pitch. It holds around 35,000 spectators and serves as the main venue for regional football matches and other sporting events in the area.
The stadium takes its name from Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, a businessman and politician from Abeokuta who ran in the 1993 Nigerian presidential election. That election was annulled by the military government, and Abiola became a central figure in the country's push toward democracy before dying in custody in 1998.
The stadium is named after one of Ogun State's most recognized sons, and locals feel a strong connection to the venue because of that name. On match days, supporters from nearby towns fill the stands, turning the event into something closer to a neighborhood celebration than a simple sports fixture.
The stadium is located within Abeokuta and can be reached by local transport from the city center. Arriving early before major matches gives you time to find a good spot in the stands and get a feel for the ground before kickoff.
In 2018, twenty years after his death, Abiola was posthumously declared the winner of the 1993 election and granted the title of president by the Nigerian government. The stadium therefore bears the name of a man officially recognized as a head of state who never actually governed.
