Cmentarz Oliwski is a 5-hectare cemetery in Gdańsk divided into Catholic and Protestant sections with historical tombstones throughout. Mature trees provide shade and shape the landscape across the entire grounds.
The cemetery was established in 1832 following the dissolution of a nearby monastery, created because the old burial ground at St. James Church had reached capacity. This new grounds served the expanding population of the Oliwa neighborhood.
The cemetery holds graves of notable Polish activists and community leaders whose lives shaped public events in the region. Walking through, you encounter monuments that tell stories of people who mattered in their time.
Gates open daily at 7:00 AM and close at sunset, giving you the full day to walk through at your own pace. The grounds work well for visits at any time of year.
The cemetery received monument status in 1985 because of its historical structures and houses the oldest tree population in the Oliwa neighborhood. These tall trees have stood witness to the place for more than a century.
