Palmiarnia in Oliwa, Glass palm house in Oliwa district, Gdańsk, Poland.
Palmiarnia in Oliwa is a cylindrical glass building with a distinctive rounded roof that rises within Adam Mickiewicz Park. Its interior is filled with tropical plants and palms in humid conditions that give visitors a view into the plant life of warm climates.
The building was created in the 18th century as a winter garden for Cistercian monks who wanted to protect their plants. It has been rebuilt several times, with the most recent major renovation completed in 2020.
The palm house sits within the grounds of a former Cistercian monastery and reflects the gardening traditions that monks once practiced here. Today it shows how this place connects the region's religious past with modern plant conservation.
The building is easily reached and offers accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The best time to visit is from May through October, when it opens to the public.
One ancient resident was a 180-year-old date palm that grew so tall a completely new, taller building had to be constructed to house it. This plant, which watched over generations of visitors, was removed in 2021.
